About Jaisalmer Fort, Jaisalmer

The Golden Fortress of the Thar

Jaisalmer Fort, famously known as Sonar Quila (The Golden Fort) stands majestically atop Trikuta Hill amidst the expansive Thar Desert in Rajasthan. Built in 1156 AD by the Bhati Rajput ruler Rawal Jaisal, this architectural marvel is constructed from distinctive golden-yellow sandstone which shimmers with a honey-gold hue at sunrise and sunset giving it its popular name. A testament to medieval Rajput military and residential design, Jaisalmer Fort holds the unique distinction of being one of the very few “Living Forts” in the world with an estimated quarter of the city’s population still residing within its formidable walls preserving a vibrant continuous cultural heritage that earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list as one of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan.
