About Saheliyon Ki Bari, Udaipur

The Serene Garden of Maidens in Udaipur

Saheliyon Ki Bari meaning “Courtyard of the Maidens” is one of Udaipur’s most enchanting and historically significant gardens. Built by Maharana Sangram Singh II in the early 18th century this lush green retreat on the banks of Fateh Sagar Lake was designed exclusively for the Queen and her forty-eight accompanying royal maidens (Sahelis) to spend their leisure time away from courtly politics. The garden is famed globally for its magnificent marble art, intricately carved kiosks, and a unique system of fountains that operate solely on water pressure creating the soothing sound and illusion of rain. It stands today as a timeless testament to the Rajput era’s architectural brilliance and the king’s thoughtful gesture towards the royal ladies offering a tranquil escape for all visitors amidst the arid landscape of Rajasthan.
