About Monsoon Palace, Udaipur

The Royal Retreat of Mewar

The Monsoon Palace is a majestic 19th-century white marble fortress perched high on a hill overlooking Udaipur famous for its spectacular panoramic views of the city’s lakes and its original purpose as a royal retreat for watching the dramatic monsoon clouds. Perched high atop the Bansdara Peak of the Aravalli Hill range this historical residence also known as Sajjangarh Palace, offers breathtaking panoramic views of Udaipur’s lakes, palaces and the surrounding countryside. Built primarily to track the monsoon clouds this white marble palace was commissioned by Maharana Sajjan Singh (1874–1884) of the Mewar dynasty. Although his original ambitious plan for a nine-storey astronomical centre was halted by his premature death his successor completed it as a monsoon resort and hunting lodge. Today it stands as a testament to Rajput architecture and is one of the city’s most popular attractions particularly famous for its incredible sunset views.
