Hawa Mahal, also known as the Palace of Winds, is an
iconic landmark of Jaipur and one of the most popular tourist
attractions in Rajasthan. The palace was built in 1799 by Maharaja
Sawai Pratap Singh and was designed by Lal Chand Ustad, an architect
in the court of the Maharaja.
The five-story palace is constructed of pink sandstone and features
953 small windows, also known as jharokhas, which are intricately
designed to allow cool air to flow through the palace, hence the name
"Palace of Winds." The palace was originally built to provide a
vantage point for the women of the royal household to observe the
street festivities without being seen by the public.
